The Polar Bears Berlin have only a slim chance of reaching the round of 16 of the Champions Hockey League (CHL). On Tuesday evening, the German champions lost to the Swedish top team Frölunda HC from Gothenburg 1:4 (0:0, 1:3, 0:1).

National striker Leonhard Pföderl scored the only goal for Berlin, who lost for the fourth time in the fifth main round game.

The Berliners conceded three goals in the second third

In front of 6,221 spectators in the Arena at Ostbahnhof, the home team, who had to do without a few injured regular players, withdrew from the start and relied on isolated counterattacks. The guests dominated the game, but only had a few clear chances before the first break.

In the second third, the Swedes took advantage of their playful and running superiority: with goals from Erik Thorell (25th minute), Henrik Tömmernes (28th) and Jacob Peterson (34th), they moved ahead to 3-0 before Pföderl reduced the deficit for the hosts (38th).

The Berliners continued to try hard in the final period, but despite several outnumbered situations, they were unable to further reduce their deficit. Instead, Thorell made the final decision in favor of the guests with his second goal when Eisbären goalie Jonas Stettmer had gone off the ice for an additional field player (59th).
