For the second time within 24 hours, the volunteer fire brigades in the Oder-Spree district had to go on a large-scale operation to deal with a basement fire.

There was a fire in the basement of a residential building in Ziolkowskiring in Fürstenwalde-Nord on Wednesday evening around 8 p.m. The fire brigade and rescue service were again in large-scale operation.

Thick smoke was coming from the basement when the first emergency services arrived, and numerous residents were standing on balconies. The fire department rescued 16 people using a turntable ladder. A resident was taken to hospital with suspected smoke poisoning.

People had to wait outside in the apartment building while the fire was extinguished.
