Cecilia Sala is free and she is already on board a plane that will take her back to Italy, after the days spent in one prison in Iran. The Italian journalist from Foglio and Chora Media, as announced in a note made public a few minutes ago by Palazzo Chigi, will soon return home, after being arrested in the Asian country on December 19th, without any formal charges. The reporter was there to document people’s living conditions.

Palazzo Chigi announced that the plane with Cecilia Sala on board took off from Tehran on the morning of Wednesday 8 January 2025, to bring her home. “Thanks to intense work on diplomatic and intelligence channels, our compatriot has been released by the Iranian authorities and is returning to Italy”, this is what we read in a note made public to announce that Cecilia Sala is finally free. The plane is scheduled to arrive at 3.30pm at Ciampino.

The President of the Council, Giorgia Meloniexpressed “gratitude to all those who contributed to making Cecilia’s return possible, allowing her to hug her family and colleagues again”. The Premier then added that she “personally informed the journalist’s parents during a phone call that took place a few minutes ago”.

Cecilia Sala was arrested on 19 December 2024 in the hotel where she was staying in the Iranian capital and no formal charges were ever brought against her. The 29-year-old was jailed in Evin Maximum Security Penitentiaryin isolation, in a single cell. He was in Iran on a regular journalist visa. News of his arrest only emerged on December 27, 2024.

The Italian authorities immediately moved to negotiate his release. There has been speculation that his arrest may have been linked to that of Iranian engineer Mohammad Abedini held in Italy at the request of US authorities, who requested his extradition, on 16 December 2024.
