Macron receives Abbas, Israel angry

Two months after French recognition of the Palestinian state, French President Emmanuel Macron received Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The main topic of discussion in Paris was the “full implementation” of the ceasefire that has been in force in the Palestinian Gaza Strip for a month. Israel criticized the meeting in advance.

After the consultations, Macron announced the creation of a joint committee for the strengthening of the Palestinian state. The committee will deal with all aspects of this, from the constitution to the organization of the country, French media such as BFMTV report.

Macron and Abbas also discussed the next steps of the Gaza peace plan. Paris further emphasized that the Palestinian Authority, which for years had no authority in the Gaza Strip, will have to reform. Abbas emphasized that that is also his goal, including the willingness to hold elections.

According to French media, the Israeli embassy in France has strongly criticized Abbas’ reception in Paris. Earlier this year, Israel also criticized Paris’s recognition of the Palestinian state.
