According to CDU faction leader Kai Wegner, some of the traffic lights in Berlin should be switched off at night in order to save more energy.

“When it comes to saving electricity, I’m also thinking about traffic lights: Do they really have to light up at every intersection at night, or are the right-of-way regulations enough on less busy streets?”

“Every second traffic light in Berlin can be safely switched off at night – other cities have been doing this for a long time.” The traffic administration should implement this quickly.

Due to concerns about energy shortages, the red-red-green Senate decided on a catalog of measures for the public sector in the middle of the month. For example, the room temperature in all public buildings is to be lowered to 20 degrees Celsius.

At the same time, Wegner called on the private sector to use fewer neon signs. “I think it would be right to limit the lighting on large billboards, for example in the deep hours of the night. The economy must also send a signal that the extent of the crisis has been understood,” he told the newspaper.

Because of an impending gas shortage and sharply rising energy prices, Germany is in a serious situation. “We must prevent an energy emergency in winter.”
