30-year-old Leroy van D. from Julianadorp had to appear in court in Alkmaar today for various traffic violations. He would have been caught under the influence and with a high speed violation in the municipality of Schagen during a driving ban imposed by the court. In addition to two months unconditional prison sentence, the public prosecutor demanded an extra six-month suspension of the driving license.
Leroy van D. was convicted in 2019 after he had caused an accident in Hoorn in early March 2019 in which a 70-year-old woman came to life. Van D. tapped the 70-year-old victim’s car during a rash overtaking action on the Provincialeweg in Hoorn. She lost control of her vehicle and collided with a tree. Van D. initially drove on, but later reported to the police. The woman died of her injuries two weeks after the accident.
Van D. had to answer to the judge later that year. He was sentenced to an unconditional prison sentence of fifteen months and a driving ban of five years.
Caught again
Despite he became caught again in February last year. The man drove at a speed of 129 km per hour on the Keinsmerweg in ‘t Zand where a limit of 60 km per hour applies. A blood test was done and it was found that the man was driving under the influence of the drug THC (weed), he had four times the permitted amount of THC in his body. The suspect said in a statement that he was on his way to pick up his child.
Unconditional imprisonment
For the crimes, driving under the influence of drugs and driving without a valid driver’s license, the Public Prosecution Service sees no other appropriate punishment than a prison sentence. “It is completely unacceptable that the man has started driving again with a previously imposed five-year driving ban, that he has no regard for that verdict, while his driving license has also been declared invalid by the CBR,” the public prosecutor explained at the hearing. .
The suspect expressed no remorse in court in Alkmaar today. He felt that he had already been punished enough and appealed. Van D. has also been convicted of the illuminating the elderly and for mistreatment of a prison employee.
