On December 28, 1895 it took place at Salon Indien of the Grand Café in Paris on the Boulevard des Capucines, the first paid public cinema screening organized by the brothers Lumiere. For the cost of just one franc, Parisians attended a twenty-five minute show in which ten films were screened: this was the birth of cinema. An incredible event, for the first time photographic images come to life, opening up a new world of enchantment and amazement, opportunities and knowledge. Prodigy or magic? The public was astonished, so much so that, as legend has it, a few days later, on 6 January 1896, during the screening of the famous short film by Auguste And Louis Lumiere The arrival of a train at La Ciotat stationthe spectators, seeing the convoy advancing on the screen, fled the theater in panic for fear of being overwhelmed. Fact and fiction. From the first short films focused on “painting” scenes of everyday life, to the “dream factory”, cinema becomes a privileged means for telling true or imaginary stories, managing, over the years, to adapt to the historical and cultural changes of society, reflecting its problems, aspirations and transformations. The seventh art, as defined in 1921 by the critic Ricciotto Canudocapable of uniting and synthesizing the six previous arts (architecture, sculpture, painting, music, poetry and dance) through the moving image, narrative and technology, giving life to a complete and global artistic experience capable of telling stories, arousing emotions and reflecting reality.
