Dress up through the streets with a cart with Vastlaoves music. It’s a familiar sight these days. But not with carnivalists who use garbage bags and prods. Except in Geleen.
Just like last year, a group of cleanup volunteers gathered through the streets to clean up what other carnivalists have left behind.
Pram full of beer cans
“They really throw everything on the ground. Then they take a whole pram full of beer cans with them, but when they are empty they are not taken back in the same pram but they end up on the ground”, says volunteer Jo Gerardu.
playful initiative
Last year the litter cart was the only car with regular music that passed through the streets of Geleen. There was no landfill then, but litter is always there. Initiator Michel van Dijke thought it was a great idea and this year the concept is therefore being repeated.
Municipal cleaning
“Here in the center where we start, the municipal cleaning service will also come, but we move further into the neighborhood and there is still enough litter there,” he says.
The Flaarisse
The volunteers did not have to do everything alone today. The princely company of De Flaarisse also rolled up their sleeves. “A matter of course”, says sir Luck Brouns of the association. “Yesterday we had such a beautiful parade here, now we are happy to help clean up.”
Surprise
And Prince Daan II also had a surprise for two loyal cleaning volunteers. They received a princely award for their work.
