First just do the administration: Kia (3,085 registrations) is the best -selling brand in May, followed by Skoda (2,046), Toyota (2,317), Volkswagen (2,230) and Volvo (1,824). The most popular models are the Skoda Elroq (1,093), Kia Picanto (800), Kia EV3 (751), Tesla Model Y (648) and Toyota Yaris Cross (627).
Share of electric in car sales
The market share of EVs in car sales is still rising, to 34.6 percent in May. That gasoline is so sinking (14.2 percent) is of course because there are fewer and fewer new cars with only a gasoline engine. That is the reason that hybrids (49.2 percent) are so dominant. Diesel (1.7 percent) and LPG (0.3 percent) have almost become irrelevant.
Biggest risers and Dalers car sales
The risers and fallers then. Which brands are doing well beyond expectations and which have to scratch themselves behind the ears? We don’t look at the month of May alone, but at the first five months of 2025.
Stijger – Alfa Romeo
Well, we shouldn’t write this down, because if you don’t come from anything, it can of course only go up. And that does Alfa Romeo (from 120 registrations to 441). The Tonale still does not really sell tasty (111), but the Junior Momentum starts to grab (324).
Daler – Fiat
What’s going on at Fiat. The brand went 2,331 registrations in the first five months from 2024 to only 854 now. There is only one reason to point out: the sudden decrease in the popularity of the 500, which went from 1,964 registrations to 200.
Stijger – Cupra
Has Cupra already overtaken mother brand Seat in car sales? No, not yet, but that will happen once. Cupra went from 777 registrations in the first five months from 2024 to 1,537 now. Seat is suffering from the disappearance of the Tarraco and almost 500 registrations came out, at 2,029.
Daler – Hyundai
At Hyundai they have to look at Kia Knarsetandenden, because there it works. The parent company is even bigger on the home market, in South Korea, but it doesn’t make much difference. Here that is no longer the case. Hyundai fell from 9,652 registrations to 7,098. Kia rose from 15,571 to 16,630.
Stijger – Renault
We saw that coming. Renault made a leap of 6,575 registrations to 7,942 and that is purely in the new 5. The compact EV – which not only looks fun, but also drives – is hugely popular and took 1,490 registrations in one go.
Daler – Tesla
Of course we saw that coming. Tesla CEO Elon Musk helped the image of the company to the Galleemiezen in a record pace with his political interference and support for extreme right-wing parties. Selling Tesla bags almost everywhere in the worldalso here (from 9,959 to 4,880).
Bonus Dealer – Volvo
In the past, the car sales were predictable and stable: Opel of Volkswagen was at the top and behind it what usual suspects followed. Volvo proves that there is no arrow on it now, which makes a pike dive from 14,854 registrations to 8,399. The reason? The EX30 and XC40 are no longer in demand.
