Car manufacturer from China BYD replaces VW as EM partner

VW served as a mobility partner at the last European Championships. Another provider has now secured the contract for the tournament in Germany.

The Chinese car manufacturer BYD will be the official mobility partner of the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany. UEFA announced this at the end of last week. The “market leader for electric vehicles” will thus “make its electric cars available to various stakeholders” during the tournament, as the statement states.

BYD is replacing VW, the current mobility partner of the German national team and most recently UEFA’s European Championship partner, as sponsor. However, VW had already announced in September last year that it would not seek a partnership for the European Championship.

With the new sponsor, the association wants to advance the vision of “promoting a greener and more sustainable finals,” Guy-Laurent Epstein, Uefa’s marketing director, is quoted as saying. Michael Shu, Managing Director of BYD Europe, aims to “make e-mobility accessible to everyone,” as the statement continues.

In addition to BYD, twelve other companies are listed as UEFA’s official sponsors for the European Championship, including Coca-Cola, Adidas and the supermarket chain Lidl.
