Cannes, the best (and worst) looks in the history of the Festival

TEverything is ready for the Cannes Film Festival 2023. The event will kick off on May 16thwith the first red carpet opening, and will continue until May 27, when the closing ceremony will stage the assignment of the coveted Palme d’Or. Will be Clare Mastroianni, daughter of the unforgettable Marcello and Catherine Deneuve, the godmother of the 76th edition. Expected 11 days of screenings, events, noble parties such as the amfAR. Who will stand out on the red carpet, for better or for worse?

Clothes and looks have always been central to the Cannes Film Festival. From the 50s to today, there are many stars who have trod the famous French red carpet, catalyzing the attention of the world public. With results, on the fashion side, more or less successful.

Recent history: the tops and flops of Cannes 2022

Going backwards, we need to dwell on the best looks of the past edition of Cannes 2022. A Festival that in terms of style has kept the bar high: just think of the memorable outfit of Anne Hathawaythe wonderful signed creation in white Armani Prive For Armageddon time by James Gray. A white column dress completely covered in ton sur ton sequins, for a truly memorable debut.

The same cannot be said of other illustrious colleagues: for one ensembles extremely refined, several slips of style. Just remember Naomi Campbell at the presentation of the film Heojil Kyolshim: for its grand rentrée on the Croisette, the panther bet everything on a dress Valentine Haute Couture feathered, which didn’t fit her perfectly and left little room for the imagination.

The best promoted looks of Cannes

In and out. In the review of the best (and worst) best looks of Cannes, everything is really over. The past teaches: to pay are the put of effect but that do not lose elegance. Like those of Bella Hadid in 2021, diva of yesteryear in yesteryear black&white clothes (unforgettable, the vintage creation signed Jean-Paul Gaultier).

And if the parade without shoes for Money Monster in 2016 of Julia Roberts (in black Armani Prive) remains in the annals, even some sparkling looks have made the glamorous history of the Festival, from Uma Thurman in style fringed dress Roaring Twenties Of Versace Atelier at the closing ceremony in 2017 a Jessica Chastain in Gucci way back in 2012. And what about Sharon Stone at the 1995 Festival, unzipped with the body of gold sequins?

The “rejections” in the history of the Festival

For so many top looks, the history of the Cannes Film Festival also recalls several flops. Among the less chic, the exit of Kristen Stewart in 2018 for the premiere of BlacKkKlansmanin a mini dress Chanel from the Fall-Winter 2013/2014 collection. If the dress was flawless, the unforgivable mistake was taking off the pumps Christian Louboutin right on the red carpet.

In 2013, it was the turn of Laetitia Casta in Christian Dior Couture attract criticism, this for the styling error of adding a bolero of golden feathers that certainly didn’t make her fly to the Olympus of the best dressed. More modern style slides? Just think of the looks of Tina Kunakey in 2021, judged too scenic.

All we have to do is ask ourselves… what will be the next “outs”?
