On Monday, Canada played its penultimate test before the World Cup. Alphonso Davies was not there. The fear for the exceptional player continues.

The World Cup opening game will take place in nine days, and Canada will start in ten days. The host will play the third game of the home tournament and will host Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12th (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online).

But it is still unclear whether Alphonso Davies will be on the pitch. The FC Bayern star player suffered a muscle injury in the back of his left thigh against Paris Saint-Germain at the beginning of May and has been out since then. Davies also had to watch Canada’s World Cup friendly against Uzbekistan last Monday evening. Coach Jesse Marsch’s team won the game 2-0 and had reason to be happy about the result. But waiting for Davies dampens the mood somewhat.

“We’ll just have to wait and see how everything develops over the next few days. I’ll just continue with my rehab, with my progress, and see how I feel, day by day, step by step,” said Davies. Will he be fit in time for the start of the World Cup? “I can’t say that at the moment. Of course I could answer yes or no, but it all depends on how the rehab goes,” he said.

After Bosnia, Qatar and Switzerland are waiting

Davies is actually captain of Canada and is supposed to lead the team. It is still unclear when he will be able to do this at the home tournament. At the moment it “feels good to go back on the pitch and run a bit. I’m happy to be back home and I’m looking forward to being with the boys and supporting them. Whether on the pitch or off it – I enjoy doing it.”
