No goals against Ireland – and yet the German hockey women at the European Championship in Mönchengladbach have land to celebrate.
After the bankruptcy against the Netherlands, the German hockey women only difficult to make the jump to the semi-finals at the European Championship. However, the newly formed team of the Dutch trainer Janneke Schopman plays for a medal at the first tournament.
“I think we didn’t play as well as we wanted,” said Schopman after the game at Magentasport. “Not everything went smoothly,” added international Sonja Zimmermann. A lot was missing, “accordingly we are not satisfied with the 0-0”. The semi -finals against the Belgians will be a “very big challenge”. Captain Lisa Nolte said self -critically: “We can play hockey much better than we did today.”
After the 0-0 against Ireland, the team reached second place in Group A behind defending champion Netherlands and meets on Friday (8 p.m.) in the semi -finals like the EM 2023 in Belgium. In the second semi -finals, top favorites and record winners Netherlands and Spain face each other at 5 p.m.
Increase only after half -time
In the Mönchengladbach hockey park, the DHB selection was initially very unsettled after the 1: 5 against Oranje. The guests played very disciplined and even came to a seven meter in the first quarter, which goalkeeper Julia Sonntag was able to parry. It was only after half -time that the hosts came to better offensive scenes, but could not use them.
In addition, the team is no longer complete after the injury -related failure of Felicia Wiedermann (knee) and the battered Sonja Zimmermann (thighs), who, however, came at a few minutes. With Belgium, however, a team is waiting in the semifinals that are much better quality than Ireland.
The team recently became second in the European Championship and defeated the German selection in the past proleague twice, once in the shootout. Germany was also left behind in the last two European Championship semi-finals (2017 and 2023).
