Burgemeester and aldermen of Heemstede wants to redesign the Van Merlenlaan to keep freight traffic. And make the road safer. First, old sewer pipes and water pipes in the ground must be replaced. In the municipal design, cyclists will run on cycle paths on the motorway. They must ‘slow down’ the other traffic to thirty kilometers per hour.

‘Free cycle path is safer’

Local residents find that far too dangerous and fear for accidents. They want to retain the current separate cycle path, which means that cyclists and cars drive separately. Because that is much safer, they think.

On Wednesday, around 200 inhabitants with a protest march went to the town hall. They handed mayor Falgun Binnendijk a petition that was signed by around 4,500 Heemstedenaren.
