The First Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, assured this Wednesday in the control session of the Government in the Congress of Deputies that nothing has been transferred to any vulture fund related to the Management Company for Assets Proceeding from Bank Restructuring (Shareb).

“What there is is a contract for the provision of services that already existed since the past and has been signed with a procedure that began before our takeover, but that has followed the principles of transparency”, explained the economic owner of the Government, in response to the EH Bildu deputy, Oskar Matute, who has indicated that the Executive wants to hand over the Sareb homes to vulture funds.

“I take this opportunity to deny that information because it does not correspond to reality at all,” Calviño stressed. In addition, the first vice-president has defended that The Government has launched a set of initiatives that respond to the promotion of the park of social housing.

Specifically, he pointed out that it has given impetus to the agreements with city councils and autonomous communities for the social housing policy, increasing the homes made available by Sareb to 15,000. In addition, a new support model is going to be launched for the most vulnerable families, some 10,000, with the Ministry of Inclusion.

It has also been made available tothe Ministry of Inclusion nearly 900 homes to accommodate refugees from Ukraine Y a mapping of all the properties is being carried out to try to find its best use.

An “inheritance” of the 2008 crisis

The Vice President stated that the Sareb is an “inheritance” of the financial crisis which, contrary to what was said at the time, has meant the assumption by the State – from the accounting point of view – of some 35,000 million euros of debt. “We have had to manage not only the challenges of the present and future, but also the legacy of the past,” Calviño pointed out.

To the question from deputy Oskar Matute, from the Euskal Herria Bildu Parliamentary Group, about How will the Government manage the Sareb housing stock now that it has been taken over by the State?the first vice-president explained that the shareholding situation has already been changed and now this new stage is being launched in which, together with the financial objectives, the social objectives will play an important role.

“What we are doing is defending the general interest, acting responsibly and trying to maximize the recovery of public aid and the social return of that asset pool – of homes and other real estate assets – since the takeover,” he defended .

The deputy Oskar Matute considers that the Government should put these houses in the hands of the autonomous communities and the municipalities. “Doing this strengthens the public housing stock and allows social cohesion policies that do not make the right to housing a privilege only for those who can pay for it,” defended the EH Bildu deputy.
