A few weeks ago, Borussia Dortmund still looked behind in the fight for international business. But BVB fights back bit by bit.
With a furious 4-1 win at SC Freiburg, BVB made a jump in the Bundesliga table and temporarily took on eighth place. The team of coach Niko Kovač can even hope for the Champions League after two wins in a row, because the gap to fourth place is only four points, but can still grow to five in a Gladbach victory on Sunday.
The goals for BVB scored Karim Adeyemi (34th), Carney Chukwuemeka (51st), Serhou Guirassy (68th) and Jamie Gitten (78th) Maximilian Eggestein in the 88th minute.
“We know what the situation in the table looks. We have to play the game first and hopefully win so that we can then look at,” said Dortmund coach Kovač shortly before kick -off at Sky: “What will come on Wednesday or next Saturday is totally unimportant.”
The Dortmunders had to do without the yellow -locked Nico Schlotterbeck and the injured Niklas Süle and Marcel Sabitzer. The stricken striker Guirassy was back in the squad. The Englishman Chukwuemeka borrowed from FC Chelsea celebrated its starting eleven debut. At the Freiburg, Stammtorwart Noah Atubolu (shoulder injury) and Merlin Röhl (infection) were missing. Atubolu was replaced by Florian Müller, captain Christian Günter was only sitting on the bench.
In front of 34,700 spectators in the sold-out Freiburg Arena, including ex-national coach Joachim Löw, both teams pressed the pace in the early stages. Both BVB and the SC were on fast ball gains.
In the 17th minute, the ball jumped the Dortmund defender Ramy Bensebaini with an unsuccessful attempt at clarification in the penalty area, referee Felix Zwayer continued. As at the beginning, things went back and forth in the middle of the first half, no team was able to develop an overweight. It was always dangerous in front of both goals.
After half an hour, the Dortmund gained the upper hand, this phase used Adeyemi to take the lead with a strong degree. The BVB then defended solidly and took the result into the break.
At the beginning of the second round, however, the entire BVB defensive slept. After 23 seconds, Ritsu Doan Frei appeared in front of Gregor Kobel, but the Japanese could not overcome the Dortmund goalkeeper. Shortly afterwards it did better Chukwuemeka on the opposite side of a counterattack. The 21-year-old’s shot was deflected by defender Philipp Lienhart for Müller.
The Freiburgers were not shocked and vehemently urged their first goal. But Kobel also held against Junior Adamu (54th).
After about an hour, Guirassy came for Maximilian Beier. He promptly hit Chukwuemeka and Julian Brandt into the empty goal after a strong preparatory work. Gitten made it even clearer. Eggestein prepared the final point.
