The future of midfielder Julian Brandt at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund appears increasingly uncertain.
According to Sky information, the 28-year-old and his father and consultant Jürgen are already explaining options for a change in the coming summer. Brandt’s contract with BVB actually applies until 2026. The club could only generate a transfer this summer or in the coming winter.
The 48-time international Brandt, for whom current Nation League games does not nominate, has been wearing the number 10 at BVB for the first time this season. He acts as a central game designer. At the age of 28, he is one of the most experienced players and in his sixth season at BVB the currently serving footballer in the squad. In 2019 he was switched from Bayer Leverkusen to Dortmund for 25 million euros.
Brandt was intended as a leading player – and disappointed
After the farewell to Marco Reus and Mats Hummels last summer, Brandt was actually intended as a leading player at BVB. However, just like the whole team, he does not play a good Bundesliga season. There the club is currently only in eleventh place and has ten points behind fourth place. A renewed qualification for the Champions League is unlikely to appear eight game days before the end of the season. In the current Champions League season, however, BVB made it to the quarter-finals. There you will meet FC Barcelona in April.
A few days ago, the BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl replied to the question of Brandt’s role in the future squad: “You can’t really say that in the current situation. Of course we have a contract, but we are in a difficult situation.” This sounded for the first time after a possible farewell in summer.
