BVB: Lothar Matthäus assesses Sancho’s return

Jadon Sancho is returning to Borussia Dortmund and thus to the Bundesliga. For record national player Lothar Matthäus, this BVB transfer makes perfect sense.

“If Sancho delivers his performance again, the BVB team could be shaken up. And if the numbers are right, Borussia Dortmund is not taking any big financial risks,” said Matthäus, assessing the winter deal on “Sky”.

Sancho will play on loan at BVB until the end of the season, after which he will return to his parent club Manchester United. A purchase option was not agreed. According to reports, the runner-up has to transfer between three and four million euros to England.

Matthäus: Sancho in top form is also good for the Bundesliga

Even though the 23-year-old has not played a competitive game since August 2023 after a falling out with United team manager Erik ten Hag and therefore does not return to black and yellow in top form, TV expert Matthäus also sees the player’s advantages: “His goals, his His assists, his speed and his understanding of the game speak for him. He’s still a big name, even if he never made the breakthrough at United.”

It would be “a welcome reunion” if Jadon Sancho “came back the way he left BVB in 2021,” said the 62-year-old: “Not just for Borussia Dortmund, but for the entire Bundesliga.” At that time, after four years at Borussia Dortmund, he went to Manchester United for 85 million euros.

After the transfer announcement on Thursday, BVB coach Edin Terzic revealed to “Sky” as part of the recordings for the series “BVB 09 – Stories who we are” that he had made clear demands on the offensive star in the discussions: ” I told him what I want, what I need, what he can expect from us. We’re willing to give him the chance to show that he can do it again, that he’s far from finished. But I I don’t have time, he doesn’t have time, we don’t have time.”
