In talks with derby hero

Borussia Dortmund wants to extend the contract with storm talent Youssoufa Moukoko, which expires at the end of the season, and according to sports director Sebastian Kehl, is on the right track. “He hasn’t signed yet. But we are sure: We are still the right club for him and want to continue writing the story,” he said in a “double pass” on “Sport1” about the 17-year-old, who scored the winning goal against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday (1: 0) became a derby hero.

“We’ve been in talks for quite some time. Both sides know what they have from each other,” said Kehl: “Youssoufa knows that the next step is important. That he needs a club that builds on him. It’s normal for the boy to look like he’s getting his act together. But he also knows that he doesn’t have to sign the economically largest contract at 17.” When asked why Moukoko hadn’t extended his contract yet, Kehl said: “Some things don’t belong in the public domain. We are very close, we don’t need the public for that. We can do this.”

Moukoko made his professional debut with the Black and Yellows in November 2020 and was subsequently given a market value of 10 million euros, the highest starting value in Bundesliga history at the time. Almost two years later, the attacker is worth 15 million euros and, together with Endrick (16) from Palmeiras São Paulo, is the most valuable U17 player in the world.

Kehl was cautious about demands that Moukoko, who came on as a substitute against Schalke, have to play from the start in the next game on October 1 at 1. FC Köln for Anthony Modeste (34), who was still a stranger. “He’s going to get his chance and he’s really close. But the next game is also a very special one for Tony,” he said. Modeste switched from Cologne to Borussia in August: “But the discussion will end soon because we will soon have games every three days and need everyone.”

BVB sports director Kehl gives the all-clear for Marco Reus’ injury

The victory in the Revierderby on Saturday was clouded by the injury of captain Marco Reus. The 33-year-old lost his ankle after half an hour and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. On Sunday, however, there was good news: “I can give the all-clear a little bit,” says Kehl. “The examinations yesterday showed no fracture. He has a lateral ligament injury in his ankle, but not so serious that the World Cup is at risk.” He hopes “that Marco will be available to us again in three to four weeks.”
