In the final of the Africa Cup, Sébastien Haller became the match winner for the hosts Ivory Coast, but after his return to Borussia Dortmund the striker suffered a health setback. As the Black and Yellows announced, the 29-year-old’s old ankle injury reopened after he sprained his ankle shortly before the end of the final. He first suffered this injury against Mainz in mid-December. Haller will not be available to BVB for several weeks.

So far this season, Haller has played 14 games lasting 450 minutes for Dortmund, but has only been in the starting line-up five times. The undisputed number one forward is Niclas Füllkrug (31), who scored eleven times in 1,957 minutes. In addition to his winning goal in the 2-1 final against Nigeria, Haller had already been the winning goal scorer in the Ivorian team’s 1-0 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the semifinals. After Haller and his teammates’ triumph, many observers recalled the special story of the striker, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in the summer of 2022, shortly after his move from Ajax Amsterdam to BVB. After several months of treatment, Haller returned to the field.
