BVB: Edin Terzic brings double leadership with Moukoko & Modeste into play

Under Rose to no avail

BVB trainer Edin Terzic does not rule out putting Youssoufa Moukoko and Anthony Modeste in the starting XI in the future. “Why not? We want to keep all options open. It’s just important that we have a good feeling that it can work,” said the 39-year-old coach before the Bundesliga club’s Champions League game on Tuesday (9 p.m.) in front of their home crowd against Sevilla.

At the 2:2 in the Bundesliga summit against FC Bayern Munich, Modeste, who came on in the 70th minute, prepared the 1:2 through Moukoko and headed the equalizer in the final minute. “On Saturday they impressively demonstrated that the two not only harmonize well on but also off the pitch,” commented Terzic.

Switching to two strikers would be a first for the 39-year-old. Terzic always played in 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, both during his first term and since his return to the coaching bench in the summer. After 45 games, he could bring two attackers from the start against Sevilla for the first time – a tactical measure that his predecessor Marco Rose wanted to establish at the beginning of the 2021/22 season, but stopped after moderate success. BVB lost four of nine games with two attackers between August and November 2021.

The 34-year-old Modeste, who was hired to replace Sébastien Haller, who was suffering from a tumor during the summer break, had lost his regular place to Moukoko after disappointing performances and was already considered a bad buy by many fans. After his liberating sense of achievement against Bayern, the former Cologne player also considers it “an option” to storm alongside the youngster in the future. Despite the competitive situation, both professionals maintain a friendly relationship. “I’m also happy for Mouki that he scored. I’m basically his father,” Modeste said.
