BVB captain Marco Reus is “Mister 1:0”: Kirsten caught up, top 5 in view

Best rate in the Bundesliga ranking

In the 2-1 win against RB Leipzig it was that time again: BVB captain Marco Reus lived up to his reputation as “Mister 1-0” and put the black and yellow team on the road to victory with a penalty. For the 33-year-old it was the 61st goal to make it 1-0 in the Bundesliga, Reus caught up with ex-DFB striker Ulf Kirsten in sixth place in the all-time best list. However, none of the top 20 can match the 41.2 percent share of Reus’ total goals.

“Marco often not only showed good performances, but also played a decisive role in the victories and scored important goals,” emphasized BVB coach Edin Terzic before the round of 16 second leg in the Champions League against Chelsea on Tuesday (9 p.m./ in the TM live ticker). “He is an extremely important player. We know we can use every player in the coming weeks.”

Mats Hummels (34) had already described Reus in 2016 as a personified “can opener” for a game, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (33) had a simple explanation for his quality at the time: “He is a special player. That’s why he always makes it 1-0.” Reus, on the other hand, couldn’t make sense of it: “I have no idea. Really not. (…) I always try to be in the right place somehow.”

Most 1-0 lead goals in the Bundesliga: BVB captain Reus has his eye on the top 5

There is a good chance that Reus will be in the top 5 Bundesliga players with the most 1-0 lead goals by the end of the season. Jupp Heynckes only has one more goal to make it 1-0 ahead of him. “It’s a nice side effect,” said Reus last year about his progress in the ranking. “I’m very happy to take that with me.” Even if Reus should extend his contract with BVB and play in the Bundesliga for a few more years, the dual leadership of Gerd Müller and Klaus Fischer should be out of reach. The gap to the two legends is 25 goals.
