BVB boss Watzke questions his commitment to coach Edin Terzić

Last summer, the BVB boss made a remarkable statement about coach Terzić. He wouldn’t do that again. A TV expert predicts a separation after the end of the season.

Three games, three wins. Things are going well for BVB in the new year. Back in December, Borussia was stumbling seriously and coach Edin Terzić came under heavy criticism. After a crisis meeting shortly before Christmas, the club officials decided: the coach could continue.

So far this decision is paying off. But what has changed in the meantime? Two new players came in, Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen. And two new assistant coaches. Long-time BVB professionals Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender assist coach Terzić.

TV expert Mario Basler also sees Sahin and Bender as the main reason why Dortmund has returned to success. And at the same time, by installing the duo, he is disempowering the head coach. In his podcast “Basler ballert” the ex-national player said: “He (Terzić, editor) needs two at his side and that’s why they were given to him. That’s why I also believe that something will happen during the summer break. “

Watzke: “I don’t know if I would say that again”

However, BVB and Terzić had always emphasized that Sahin and Bender were brought in at the coach’s explicit request, so Terzić was in no way “placed there” with the two, as Basler claims.

While Basler sees a weakening of Terzić, BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke sees exactly the opposite. He made this clear again in the program “Bild Sport” on Welt TV: “This is a sign of intelligence and strength. Only people who can do something get people who can do something. People who are insecure get people any plum.”

At the same time, however, he also admitted that he would no longer express the absolute commitment he made to Terzić in August. Watzke: “I don’t know if I would say it like that again,” explained the 64-year-old. Before the start of the season he had announced: “We’ll go the route with Edin Terzić for the next few years. Period, out.”

He was then surprised “that such a big deal was made of it. My credibility was questioned, it’s all nonsense. My belief is that Edin Terzić is an excellent coach. I expressed that. No more and not less.”

Basler: “I think we’ll see a new coach in Dortmund”

It is clear “that at some point the future will come to an end. I also know that football is a results sport. If you lose 15 times, it will be difficult,” said Watzke.

In any case, it is clear to Basler that Terzić’s path at BVB ends in the summer. Also because there are many well-known alternatives. Basler: “A coach quits in Barcelona. That’s certainly interesting if you can be a coach in the Bundesliga, because Xavi may have also spoken to Alonso (Xabi Alonso, coach of Bayer Leverkusen, ed.).”

Basler continued: “Someone in Liverpool is quitting (Jürgen Klopp, editor). Nagelsmann will be released in the summer.” He is determined: “No matter how this season ends, I believe that we will see a new coach in Dortmund after the season.”
