BVB bench press before moving to Belgium?

Good news for BVB: Dortmund may be able to remove Thomas Meunier from the payroll in the near future. The Belgian could return home after three years in the black and yellow jersey.

As the Belgian magazine “Voetbalkrant” reported on Wednesday, Thomas Meunier could lace up the shoes for Club Brugge in the coming season. The 31-year-old has been on BVB’s strike list for months and is said to have aroused the interest of the traditional Belgian club.

According to the report, the plans in Bruges with Meunier are already well advanced. There is already talk of a two-year contract with an option for another. The transfer is necessary because the previous right-back Clinton Mata will leave the 18-time national champion for Olympique Lyon in the summer.

It is not known how much BVB is asking for Meunier. Recently, however, it was said that the Dortmunders are willing to give a generous price reduction. There was talk of a claim of only three million euros.

BVB wants to save Meunier salary

The fact that BVB willingly sell the Belgian at a bargain price is mainly due to Meunier’s high salary. According to “Bild” information, the veteran in Dortmund receives a gross salary of around eight million euros. Too much money for a player who did not play a sporting role in Edin Terzic’s team last season.

For Meunier, a move to Bruges would mean a return to his old homeland. Already from 2011 to 2016 he laced the shoes for the “Blauw-Zwart”.

The full-back made his international breakthrough in the Bruges dress. In the summer of 2016 he moved to Paris Saint-Germain before landing in Dortmund four years later. His time at Borussia got off to a promising start, but his performance continued to decline. Therefore, those responsible are said to have made the decision months ago to part with the Belgian.
