Borussia Dortmund relies on its home strength and normality on the last day of the game. War announcements came neither from BVB nor from FC Bayern.
There has been a lot of discussion in Dortmund over the last few days: about the route for the possible master parade, about skyrocketing hotel prices or about lack of public viewing. Before the game on Saturday (05/27/2023) against Mainz, an entire city is swimming in black and yellow euphoria fever. “We could have sold well over 300,000 tickets,” said BVB. Around 400,000 visitors are expected to attend a championship celebration.
Terzic: “The key is normal”
It is almost forgotten that BVB should first play their home game successfully. Because a weak result could cause the immediate euphoria stop. The pressure may be a little higher at Bayern, but it’s not gone at BVB. “Of course it’s a special week, but the key is to do everything normally and not do anything out of the ordinary,” said coach Edin Terzic.
He mostly distracts himself with work. “But I always do that and not just before the 34th matchday. That’s why it’s not a special week for me in terms of work,” he gave an insight into his personal life. Since Tuesday, the team has been focused on the sporty. When asked about possible party plans, Terzic explained: “I don’t care what the boys might do afterwards. For me, what counts is on the lawn.”
No declarations of war from Munich
The coach expressly warned against ticking everything off: “There are referee decisions, there are good moments, there are bad moments and everything that can go with it.” Thomas Tuchel said something similar at Bayern Munich: “Anything can happen. Standards, wrong decisions, also with us.”
Otherwise there were no major declarations of war from Munich. You are unable to look anywhere else. The Bayern coach said: “We have to win, that’s it. We can then look at everything else.” The starting point is clear: if Dortmund wins, BVB are champions. If he draws, Munich must win to intercept Dortmund.
Home strength as a BVB pledge
Back to this BVB: Terzic wanted to talk about the opponent from Mainz and the game instead of about possible championship plans. It became clear that there were reasons for a BVB championship title. First and foremost the home strength of the black and yellow: Dortmund’s offensive scored 15 goals in the last three home games, all games were won. The attack by Sebastian Haller and Co. rolled over his opponents like a high-speed train.
Despite all the strength of the attack, the defense was good. BVB have not conceded three of their last five games. Nevertheless, Terzic emphasized that Mainz can certainly become dangerous: “They are one of the fittest teams in the league, they have found their system. Everyone knows their position there, nobody is too bad for something.” Mainz had already caused Dortmund problems in the first leg – Giovanni Reyna only shot the black and yellow to victory in added time.
Terzic: “My best game so far”
The relaxed-looking Terzic finally allowed a bit of emotion: “We’re not through, but we’re ready and ready to go full throttle again on Saturday. With a good portion of emotion.” He couldn’t judge whether it might be the most important game of his career: “But it’s definitely my best game so far.” If the outcome were right, 400,000 fans would certainly sign it like that at the championship celebration.
