The abuse scandal at Borussia Dortmund is apparently even more far-reaching than expected. New details come to light.
But that may be changing now. As the “Bild” reports, citing memory protocols available to the newspaper, further alleged victims contacted the paper after the original report. Their stories about the incidents are said to be similar in some details. According to Bild, two victims have now filed a complaint and the police are investigating.
The Dortmunders also took a stand again. “The previous allegations against a former employee of the club have shocked the entire BVB and affect us all,” a spokesman for the “Black and Yellow” told the newspaper. Other suspected victims are now said to have reported to the club itself.
“We take the information very seriously, have set up internal and external contact points for those affected and will fully support the external investigations. Ultimately, the German Sport University Cologne should provide affected-oriented, trauma-sensitive support,” the BVB continued.
After the publication of the first “Bild” report, the club spoke of a “vague accusation” made by a player that first became known in 2010 and emphasized that it had taken it very seriously. “Since the former employee completely denied the allegation and the former player did not file a criminal complaint, the long-standing facts ultimately could not be substantiated,” explained BVB. In 2023, after another accusation against the ex-employee became known, they parted ways with him.
The “Bild” now refers to a correction from the Champions League participant: BVB is now talking about detailed descriptions of the incidents. The entire matter should now be investigated by external auditors.
According to the newspaper, the victims were former youth players, BVB fans and neighbors of the accused man, as it reported, citing conversations with eight of them. The offenses range from one-off advances to sexual assaults lasting years. The ex-manager is said to have even financed his abuse with funds from the club’s treasury. For example, the young people are said to have received tickets or fan paraphernalia and were lured with career promises, writes “Bild”.
In 1991, a now 46-year-old victim and his brother were invited to Bremen by the ex-manager for a BVB away game and had to spend a gratuitous overnight stay in a hotel “together in a double bed”. The manager later sexually assaulted the then 13-year-old in his villa.
