What started as a school assignment a few years ago, for Caitlin Samson from Diever in the meantime grew into a big professional job. As a young designer, she can take care of the council chamber in the town hall of the municipality of Westerveld.
The municipality of Westerveld wants to redecorate the council chamber for two reasons. “On the one hand because we expected that the number of councilors would be expanded because we would go across the limit of 20,000 inhabitants,” explains Patrick Oosterlaar of the municipality. “Furthermore, the council chamber is fifteen years old. The public part was due for replacement.” The council members were also ready for a renewed workplace.
For an assignment from her education, Samson started refurbishing the canteen. “I delivered that and then they asked if I also wanted to do the council chamber.”
But renovating a council chamber is a different story notes Samson. “It is very different from normal. There are many more rules that, for example, everyone should sit and what you should pay attention to. It is really a challenge but super cool to do.”
Caitlin is now well -known at the town hall. Not only she lives at the end of the street, she also did an internship at the municipality a few years ago. “It feels a bit like at home now. I’ve been walking around here for so long,” she says. “To design something for your own village, that is a lot of fun to do.”
In total, the municipality takes one and a half tons for the renovation. Now that the political recess started last night, the makeover started immediately. Seats in the public gallery make way for a large lounge sofa and everything must feel more homely. The old seats are auctioned and can be reused in this way.
There will also be a purple runner in the color of the heath and the color of the municipality. Samson: “Westerveld is known for its nature reserves. Outdoor life is very important. I have looked a lot at the space and the shapes. I tried to bring the feeling from outside to the inside.”
For Samson it is an interesting adventure with such a big client. “I think it’s very cool that it all is starting to run now. There will certainly be very nice projects.”
