Bundesliga: FC Bayern’s feared opponents Gladbach are coming with a tailwind

As of: February 1, 2024 2:31 p.m

No other team has scored as many points against FC Bayern since 2011 as Borussia Mönchengladbach. The “Foals” are Munich’s feared opponents – the 2-1 first leg win doesn’t change that.

It took until the 87th minute of the game before Mathys Tel First leg in Mönchengladbach scored the winning goal for FC Bayern Munich. It was the first three-pointer that the record champions scored against the “Foals” after six games. No other club has had such a long losing streak against Munich. On Saturday (kick-off: 3:30 p.m./Radio report in the BR24Sport Livecenter), the team from the Lower Rhine is visiting Munich again. The term “feared opponent” is making the rounds.

It felt like Eintracht Frankfurt in particular had recently proven to be Bayern’s terror. But a look at the statistics says something different: Since 2011, no other Bundesliga team has scored as many points against FC Bayern as Borussia Mönchengladbach, namely 35 in total. Bayer Leverkusen (23 points) and Borussia Dortmund (19) follow at some distance.

Balanced balance since 2011 – cup exit not included

It started in August 2011: Borussia won 1-0 in Munich at the start of the season with a goal from Igor Camargo. Since then there have been ten wins and ten defeats for Bayern – the series champions have a positive record against every other Bundesliga team.

There are also the games in the DFB Cup: Munich’s 5-0 defeat in the 2nd DFB Cup main round in October 2021 is still a (bad) memory for most people. It was a historic defeat, as FC Bayern had never been 3-0 down after 21 minutes in a cup game.

The fact that Mönchengladbach recently scored four points against the top teams VfB Stuttgart (3:1) and Bayer Leverkusen (0:0) after a rather disappointing first half of the season should wake up coach Thomas Tuchel’s team. Even if one 1:2 home defeat against FC Augsburg was in between, the guests come with a tailwind.

Long Injury list worries

The Munich team shouldn’t be too sure about the table – the second in the table is playing against the twelfth. Although you have it Defeat against Werder Bremen (0:1) and two wins against Union Berlin and the FCA let follow. However, they were not as confident as hoped. The long injury list doesn’t help with confidence either. It is still unclear which of the winter newcomers will be on the pitch on Saturday.

What could encourage Bayern: Gladbach coach Gerardo Seoane has never won against Munich in four attempts (only a draw). At the time, that wasn’t an obstacle for former Gladbach coach Daniel Farke, for example. No matter how you twist and turn it: Gladbach is Bayern’s feared opponent. Tuchel should be warned.
