Paul Breitner had wet eyes in the stands, the team walked into the stadium in harmony with a jersey with Franz Beckenbauer’s number five on the back – football was initially secondary before FC Bayern’s game against Hoffenheim.
A photo of the “Kaiser” adorned the center circle, and in front of the south curve there was a black banner with the words “The figure of light is going on its last journey – rest in peace, Kaiser!”. When the two teams arrived, “No one can separate good friends” was played – Franz Beckenbauer’s chart success from the 1960s. Even before kick-off, stadium announcer Stephan Lehmann took the floor: “There are no words to express this loss,” he said. “Dear Franz, thank you for everything. Rest in peace!” Followed by a minute’s silence.

FC Bayern once again honored the great life’s work of its late icon Franz Beckenbauer in detail in the Bundesliga home game against TSG Hoffenheim. The Bayern professionals had already warmed up the legendary number 5 on their training jacket. During the game, both teams wore a mourning ribbon, the Munich team also wore a special jersey with the inscription “Thank you Franz”, which can also be purchased to benefit the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation. The game jerseys will be signed and auctioned after the game. The proceeds also benefit the foundation.
Lots of companions in the stadium
In the wide area you could discover many of Beckenbauer’s old companions, including Paul Breitner, Sepp Maier and many others. FC Bayern had invited them. Only after all these expressions of grief was it allowed to talk about football. “It’s a great incentive for the team and me to dedicate the game to him and win,” said coach Thomas Tuchel. Thomas Müller had previously made similar comments on social media.
The 1974 World Cup captain and 1990 team boss died last Sunday at the age of 78. The funeral took place on Friday in the immediate family circle, and next Friday (3 p.m. / BR television and ARD) there will be a funeral service for Beckenbauer in the Allianz Arena.
