Fortuna Düsseldorf's football coach, Daniel Thioune, stands on the sidelines of the Hamburg stadium wearing a black hoodie and black cap.

Werder Bremen has found a successor for fired coach Horst Steffen. Daniel Thioune is scheduled to be officially introduced on Wednesday afternoon.

Bo Henriksen was unavailable, Bo Svensson canceled. Now Werder Bremen has found a new coach. 51-year-old Daniel Thioune signed his contract on Wednesday.

We had very good conversations with Daniel. His idea of football, his style and his approach to our current sporting situation were crucial for the decision. We are convinced that with him we will achieve the turnaround.

(Werder managing director Clemens Fritz)

Thioune was released from Fortuna Düsseldorf in October last year. His contract with the Rhinelanders runs until 2028 and had to be terminated. However, he also has a HSV past. After his stint at VfL Osnabrück (2017 to 2020), Thioune sat in the coaching bench of Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen’s big arch-rival, for 32 games in the 2nd Bundesliga until May 2021.

Thioune can fight relegation

Werder had previously failed to sign one of their two preferred candidates, Bo Henriksen and Bo Svensson. Apparently Mainz vetoed Henriksen, not wanting to let the Dane, who was still contractually bound, move to a competitor. Svensson reportedly rejected Bremen’s offer.

He showed in Düsseldorf in 2022 that Thioune can save a team in a relegation battle. In February, Thioune took over the traditional club in 15th place and ended the season in secure midfield. A year later, Thioune led the team to fourth place in the 2nd Bundesliga and only failed to gain promotion in relegation another twelve months later.

I am really looking forward to working with the team and I am convinced that we will be able to work together successfully and achieve the club’s goals. After the very good discussions with those responsible, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to go to Werder.

(Werder coach Daniel Thioune)
