Because Kasper Hjulmand has a special relationship with Greenland, he addressed the US President via social media post – but without mentioning him by name.
Leverkusen coach Kasper Hjulmand made a clear statement at the turn of the year – and indirectly criticized former US President Donald Trump. In a post on the job network LinkedIn, the Dane spoke about political developments that worry him.
“Happy New Year to everyone. In a crazy and rapidly changing world, for some political leaders, knowledge, international structures, dialogue and respect for cultural differences have become the enemy. For people like them, the world is a hunting ground. But there is another way,” wrote Hjulmand.
His message is directed against a political climate that he rejects – without mentioning Trump by name. Like many compatriots, Hjulmand is concerned about the Republican’s “Greenland greed.” “I hope for more humanity, empathy and love. More knowledge and understanding. Listening more. My warmest thoughts go out to the wonderful Greenlandic people,” the 53-year-old continued. He ended the entry with a red heart and the Greenlandic flag.
There are also private reasons why Hjulmand expresses his solidarity with Greenland. His partner Maliina Abelsen was born in Denmark but grew up in Greenland’s capital Nuuk. The former Minister of Finance and Social Affairs is a prominent figure in the country. From 2020 to 2023 she worked as program manager for Unicef in Greenland. In 2014 she was named “Woman of the Year”.
Hjulmand also published a picture of the Arctic landscape and a map of Greenland underlaid with the national flag. The former Danish national coach has been involved in social projects for years.
In the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” he said on Christmas Eve: “We (his wife and he, the editor) are both curious about life, about many things. We talk about everything, look at art, or go for a walk in nature. We see the same, wonderful colors in this world. We won’t talk about football and very little about politics.”
