With Aaron Tener (20, Wolfsburg) and Ilyas viewed (20, Union Berlin), SC Paderborn 07 gave two talents this summer and thus took 8.5 million euros. A similar steep development as the outside player and the attacker took six Santiago Castañeda last season. There is also great interest in the 20-year-old American with Colombian roots shortly before the end of the alternating period, at least in Germany.
In the past few weeks, several clubs have been presented at Castañeda, including Bundesliga clubs, such as Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Augsburg, who was interested in spring. An offer from Dinamo Zagreb for the talent between 3 million and 4 million euros from MSV Duisburg in 2024 rejected the East Westphalia weeks ago, with Marko Soldo (21) an alternative was signed there.
Bröndby IF, English second division clubs such as Coventry City, Espanyol Barcelona or MLS teams around Portland Timbers are also watching his situation. The transfer window is now closed in the North American top league, but still opened in Saudi Arabia about September 1st-Deadline in Europe’s top leagues. Consultant Todt about Castañeda: “Will make his way safe”
When asked, Castañeda consultant Jens Todt said: “Santi is a technically good and game-intelligent baller top, he has a clear and interesting profile and plays ripe for his age.” Therefore, there are “quite a few clubs that are currently dealing with him without I can or want to go into individuals”. The European champion in 1996 and former sports director, for example at KSC and HSV, is certain: “He will make his way safe, regardless of whether in Paderborn or at a new station.” Castañeda’s development clearly speaks for the club: “If you as a second division club regularly hire players like Santi free of charge, who will develop so quickly, you have certainly done a lot right.”

Castañeda had increased its market value from 400,000 to 4 million euros within a year. Market value admin Tobias Kröger says about the player: “He was one of the big surprises of the season. Since his arrival in Paderborn, he has impressed with his strong performance and has shown the potential to keep up in the first league. He is very strong, but also has good technical skills, is always ball-safe and always finds good solutions under pressure. He is probably an extremely exciting player that will soon switch to a larger club.”
For Paderborn, Castañeda was in 38 games in the field (one goal/an assist) so far, including two three times this season in the league. The contract of the talent born in Tampa, Florida is still valid until 2027.
