With continuity into the future: Alexander Wehrle has extended his contract as CEO at VfB Stuttgart by 2030.
Most recently, coach Sebastian Hoeneß had already extended the VfB until 2028 – and without exit clause. Sports board member Fabian Wohlgemuth and sports director Christian Gentner, whose contracts run until 2027, are also bound to the club in the long term. Now there is also clarity with Wehrle.
Wehrle held his post at the Swabian since March 2022. He was followed by former international Thomas Hitzlsperger. Previously, Wehrle had been the managing director of 1st FC Köln for nine years.
“Heart Affairs” for Wehrle
“VfB Stuttgart is and remains a matter of the heart for me – the more I am happy about the trust of the supervisory board and the continuation of our common path,” Wehrle is quoted in a message. “In the past three years, we have made it sporty, economically and structurally important progress and again positioned VfB as an attractive location in national and international football.”
For the club, the contract extension is the logical step after the past few years. “Alexander Wehrle and his board team have made extraordinary people for our VfB in the past few years,” said Supervisory Board Chairman Dietmar Allgaier. “In an extremely difficult overall situation, VfB Stuttgart, under his leadership, managed the economic consolidation, the sporting recovery and the consistent realignment in practically all business areas.”
VfB is making ahead under Wehrle
VfB has developed on many levels since taking office. The club is also good in terms of sport: After the almost relegated 2023, the Swabians celebrated the runner-up championship behind Bayer Leverkusen a year later. In this season, Stuttgart is in the final of the DFB Cup against Arminia Bielefeld (May 24).
Wehrle, who celebrated its 50th birthday in February, also stands for “anchoring VfB as a social-cultural factor in the city and region”, as the VfB website says.
