The Bundesbank wants to advertise cash with new stickers for shop doors. “Sure, cash too!” or “Just.Cash.” are the messages on the stickers, which retailers can now obtain free of charge from regional trade associations.

“The cash stickers signal to customers that cash is welcome,” says Bundesbank board member Burkhard Balz, who is also chairman of the National Cash Forum.

The stickers, of which there is also a neutral version without text, are intended to find their place next to similar notices for credit cards and other payment service providers. Private individuals can also order the stickers free of charge from the cash forum.

Bundesbank: Cash remains

Cash remains an indispensable part of the payment infrastructure, explains Balz. Despite significant declines, cash is still often paid in Germany. In 2023 there were still just over half of the transactions at the checkout. Balz pointed out its function in times of crisis: “Cash can be used independently of technology, electricity and the Internet.”

In a first crisis exercise, the Cash Forum simulated a demand for cash fueled by social media. Also the failure of all credit and debit cards from the two major providers Visa and Mastercard were played through. The exercise showed that crisis communication structures should be further improved. The scenarios also made it clear how important initiatives for a European digital payment method such as Wero or, in the future, the digital euro are.
