Buitenkagers: blue zone as a solution to parking terror is ‘cigar from its own box’

A blue zone is intended to temporarily encourage personnel from the Van Lent shipyard – located on Kaageiland – to park their car in the designated parking lot. According to the municipal council, it would be the best way to prevent parking nuisance in Buitenkaag, at least until the current parking lot is expanded.

This was announced by a delegation from the municipality of Haarlemmermeer this morning during a session in the court of Haarlem. The case was brought by some residents of the village. They are against the arrival of the blue zone in the whole village, because they will have to pull the wallet for an exemption.

Six bucks

A lawyer from the municipality says that an exemption for two years will indeed cost 60.20 euros. This makes a free parking space for residents of Buitenkaag nothing more than ‘a cigar from one’s own box’, according to Paulette van den Berk, who lives on the Lisserdijk in Buitenkaag.

The irritations have been running high in the south of Haarlemmermeer for some time. The nuisance in the village is caused by employees of the shipyard ‘Van Lent’, a company located on Kaag, Een Eiland in the municipality of Kaag en Braassem. The only connection between Buitenkaag and Kaag(island) is a ferry. Employees of ‘Van Lent’ therefore park their car in Buitenkaag and then transfer free of charge.

220 parking spaces

The shipyard has not yet responded to questions from NH Nieuws. As a solution, however, it has concluded a lease with the land owner Spaargaren. This would mean expanding an existing parking lot by 220 parking spaces. There should also be a separate access road.

Because it is expected that some time will be required before the expansion of the parking lot has been approved by all parties within the municipality, the municipal council wants to temporarily set up a blue zone. This would be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and should act as an ‘incentive’ so that employees park their cars in the parking lot.

“As soon as the parking lot has been enlarged, we could also say goodbye to the blue zone,” said a lawyer from the municipality of Haarlemmermeer.

“Actually, they flicker everything over the fence and then we can also pay for it”

But the introduction of the blue zone could, according to Dirk Giltay Veth, lawyer for Buitenkagers, also ensure that Van Lent is less hasty with the parking lot. According to Veth, Van Lent would do well to oblige its employees to park in the parking lot. “If necessary with fines,” said lawyer Veth.

With the introduction of the blue zone, it seems that the bill for solving the parking nuisance will end up with the residents of Buitenkaag. “Actually, they flicker everything over the fence and then we can also pay for it. The blue zone applies to the whole of Buitenkaag. It is a one-way street and we are the drain of Kaageiland every time,” says Paulette van den Berk.
