A major fire broke out in a building of industrial company MTH in Hoogeveen this afternoon around 12.15 pm. The building on Stephensonstraat can no longer be saved and the fire brigade is therefore allowing the building to burn out in a controlled manner. There is a lot of black smoke visible.
“We are present in large numbers. It is quite a large building, with a lot of technology inside,” says a spokesperson for the Drenthe Safety Region. Several agricultural vehicles are said to be stored in the building. “That has a great fire potential.”
The fire brigade received a notification from the industrial company after an incipient fire was observed on one of the cameras inside. “No one was present at the time,” said the spokesperson for the Safety Region. Drones have been used for a long time to determine from above with a heat camera where the largest heat sources are located.
Shortly after the fire broke out, an NL Alert was sent due to large plumes of black smoke. It was advised to close windows and doors to keep out of the smoke. The smoke plumes are also clearly visible outside Hoogeveen, as far as Emmen. The warning was withdrawn around 2 p.m.
The fire is now under control again and the fire brigade is busy extinguishing it. It is not known how the fire started. According to the spokesperson, this will no longer be discussed. “Everything is so damaged, there are now two cranes working to demolish the building.”
