“It is more than 60 years ago that a reactor was built for the last time in the Netherlands. You can call this quite unique,” says Marieke Klaver, environment manager at the project, “The construction is going well. The construction site for the reactor has just been delivered. And further on you see that the construction site for the cooling water system is being constructed.”

The first building preparations started in 2023, after a long planning period. On the site in the Duinen, an 18 meter deep construction site was made in which the new reactor will soon be placed. Pallas, as the new reactor is called, is entering a new phase.

World production

The new reactor must help with a constant delivery of isotopes that are important in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Petten already supplies 30 to 40 percent of all means worldwide. And not only is produced, but also research into new medical isotopes.
