The success of One Against 100 has always been in its simplicity: one candidate against a hundred opponents, tightly led by Caroline Tensen, without fuss or frills. But yesterday’s season premiere showed that the formula has suddenly been tinkered with, and that has raised eyebrows. What on earth does Buddy Vedder add?
Buddy’s practical
Buddy was added to the program as a kind of fairground attraction: for example, he took a candidate out of the box to charge her with static electricity. The result? Her hair was starting to stand on end. Caroline then asked the audience a question about hairstyles. A little later he made a man from the audience make strange noises with his mouth.
It feels like loose, random snacks that have little to do with the game itself and mainly distract from what One against 100 was once so strong at. “WHAT IS THIS?” TV authority Tina Nijkamp shouts at her analysis channel.
Weird format change
Tina thinks this is really weird. “Buddy as sidekick Caroline at One against 100? Why? Why did Buddy say yes to this? What a strange format change. Suddenly Buddy starts doing random ‘tests’. Kind of Guinea Pigs from NPO 3, but what do you mean? Who is responsible for this? What madness.”
She continues: “It’s a shame about Buddy’s talent too. Nice guy. But this? And then Caroline who is supposedly enthusiastic about it. Ouch. Blunder for all parties.”
Contrived
A spy of Tina’s is also in shock. “I also thought it was strange and contrived. It doesn’t fit the format and Buddy doesn’t need this, maybe he is a new ambassador for the Postcode Lottery?”
Tina concludes: “Yes, I think so. Only reason I can think of. Money. Because in terms of image and career this is not useful for Buddy.”
Enthusiastic
In any case, Caroline herself is very enthusiastic. “Now something very nice, because from now on every episode my dear colleague Buddy Vedder will come by to do experiments here in the studio or he will go out for us to investigate something, and I think that is so much fun.
