Bryan Adams and Princess Diana: friendship or affair?

Lady Diana and Bryan Adams were good friends during their lifetime. A connection that came about through a series of happy coincidences. However, there were also all sorts of rumors about a possible affair between the two. Now, after a long time, Bryan Adams has spoken in an interview about his connection with the British princess.

The “Summer of 69” singer emphasized that he really liked Diana and saw her as a great woman and inspiration. The 64-year-old told the “Sunday Times”: “I really liked Diana. Meeting her was truly one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me.”

Diana about “Diana”

The Canadian musician had previously recorded a song called “Diana” in which he sang lines such as “The day he married you I almost lost my mind” and “Diana, what are you doing only with a guy like that?” wrote. The first time he met Lady Diana in person on a plane, he told her, “I used your name in a song once,” and Diana replied, “Yes, I know, very funny.” She wanted to hear the song again. He then sent a recording to Kensington Palace and was invited to tea. “That’s how we became friends,” Adams explained.

The singer said he learned more about Diana’s life over time, but avoided addressing speculation about an affair that circulated in the ’90s and was reinforced in 2003 by statements from his ex-girlfriend Cecile Thompson. She told the British newspaper at the time “Mirror” that her relationship with Adams became complicated due to an affair with Princess Diana. Adams did not comment on rumors of a liaison, but emphasized the friendly connection between him and Diana: “The friendship is what really counts. We had a lot of really, really good conversations.”

Song withdrawn out of respect

Adams pointed out that the song “Diana” was intended as silly humor and was inspired by an incident in which someone broke into Queen Elizabeth II’s bedroom. After Diana’s tragic death, he withdrew the song out of respect for her and her sons.
