Brussels again approves Corona financial injection for railway companies

BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – According to a decision by the EU Commission, Germany may again support railway companies with millions of euros. This time it is about 313 million, with which railway companies are to be supported in dealing with the consequences of Corona, as the Brussels authorities announced on Monday. According to the information, the measure follows a regulation for billions in aid that ran until May.

The aim is to reduce the fees that long-distance passenger transport companies have to pay in order to be able to use the rail network. The cash injection should also help ensure that rail transport remains competitive compared to cars, for example, in order to achieve European environmental and climate protection goals.

From the point of view of the EU Commission, the measure is necessary in order to shift traffic from the road to the rails. In the past, German Corona aid for the railways has been approved by the EU Commission several times.
