Impressive. Alexander Zverev wins the quarter-finals at the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon against Taylor Fritz convincingly in three sets. He had previously lost seven consecutive matches against the American over the last two years.
Zverev made it clear from the onset that he was determined to end this horror streak. The Hamburg tennis professional took control of the match from the very beginning. He never had to worry about the victory. In the end, he triumphed with a score of 6:4, 6:4, 6:2 in less than two hours.
However, Fritz was visibly hampered and had to receive treatment for his right knee, which affected his usual agility and explosiveness.
Despite this, Zverev’s performance should not be diminished. The 29-year-old displayed total dominance. His recent victory at a Grand Slam tournament a month ago at the French Open in Paris clearly provided him with a hefty dose of confidence.
Strong Serves from Zverev
Zverev got off to a dream start. He achieved an early break in the first set, leading 2:1. Even though he faced break points at 5:4, the 29-year-old maintained his composure and clinched the set.
His serving was particularly impressive. By the start of the second set, he had already delivered nine aces, boasting an incredible first serve percentage of 83%.
Fritz’s Knee Injury
Fritz battled through pain, calling medical staff to the court in the second set for treatment. He frequently touched his right knee, clearly in discomfort. Despite these issues, Zverev remained unfazed and controlled the match from start to finish. He secured the second set with a late break to 5:4, ultimately making quick work of Fritz in the final set.
Next Up: Arthur Fery
In the semi-finals on Friday, Zverev will face the local favorite, Arthur Fery, who surprisingly made it to the last four. The 23-year-old, who is competing in Wimbledon thanks to a wildcard, defeated ninth-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6:4, 7:6 (7:4), 6:0.
After his quarter-final triumph, Zverev joked, “You guys are probably rooting for him, and I have no problem with that. I hope I can play two more matches here.”
Could Zverev manage to win Wimbledon just four weeks after his French Open success? In his current form, it seems entirely possible!
