The three wind turbines come across the Boudewijnkanaal, in the Achterhaven of Zeebrugge. ENGIE already had a permit from the Flemish government for the project, but Bruges went to the Council for Permit Disputes. That appeal procedure is now being stopped.
Engie pays a considerable – but confidential – compensation, with which the city can construct a landscape buffer to limit visual nuisance, sound and light nuisance through port activities. The money is the start of the ‘Liveability Fund’ for Bruges Noord, in which other companies and the port will also contribute in the future.
