Daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore makes it clear: She finances her life herself – with four jobs and no financial help.
US actress Rumer Willis, eldest daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, is dispelling a widespread prejudice. On Instagram, she provided insights into her everyday life as a single mother and responded to the following criticism of her financial independence.
In her article “Single Moms Be Like” she documents typical everyday scenes, from cooking to laundry to leisure moments with her two-year-old daughter. Many users didn’t want to hear about it and commented that Willis shouldn’t complain and that thanks to her celebrity parents she didn’t have to worry about money.
No trust fund, no support
She made it clear in her Instagram story: She supports herself. “I work four different jobs to take care of my daughter,” she wrote. She does not have a trust fund or financial support from her parents, and she handles most of the child care on her own.
Willis acknowledges that her family background gives her certain advantages, but emphasizes that her post was not about comparing realities of life. Instead, she wanted to highlight the everyday challenges of single parents and make it clear that she doesn’t rely on her parents’ fame or fortune. She writes: “I’m very aware that I have privileges that many other people don’t have, and I don’t take that for granted at all. But this post wasn’t about privilege or comparison. It feels like people are assuming I ignored it – when that wasn’t even the issue.”
Although she is more reflective than some of her colleagues, Rumer Willis joins a number of star children who like to emphasize their independence.
The Nepo Baby Phenomenon
The term “Nepo baby” (Nepo from nepotism) refers to children of famous or influential parents who benefit from their family’s social, financial and professional advantages. Many star children emphasize that they build their careers independently, but with such enormous privileges and famous names it usually seems implausible to claim that you have achieved everything yourself. A prime example is Kylie Jenner, who often describes herself as “self-made,” even though she benefited massively from her family’s resources and the Kardashian-Jenner name.
Zoë Kravitz, daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, claims to have taken on smaller projects to showcase her skills and avoid being labeled a “daughter of.” Gwyneth Paltrow, daughter of actress Blythe Danner and director Bruce Paltrow, clearly distances herself from her privilege and says that children of famous parents have to work even harder than the rest.
But some stars are also understanding: Maya Hawke, daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, originally suggested that she got her roles regardless of her background. She later corrected herself: “I was heavily mocked for that clip on the red carpet where I said I auditioned. I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the role for nepotistic reasons – I think I totally did.”
Hailey Bieber is a humorous example: After New York Magazine called her a “double Nepo” because of her father Stephen Baldwin and her husband Justin Bieber, she self-confidently appeared in a T-shirt with the words “Nepo Baby” written on it.
