Twitter’s labeling of state-funded media has now also prompted the Canadian broadcaster CBC to leave the service.

The social media service Twitter has recently branded media with a label that implies that publicly funded media are state-financed and thus undermines the credibility of broadcasting companies.

– Our journalistic work is independent and impartial. To say otherwise is false. Because of this, we are suspending our activities on Twitter, CBC commented on the incident in a tweet.

Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau has also left the case. According to Trudeau, branding Yleisradio “government-funded” would drive away his political opponent, an influential member of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre goals.

– Now people know that it is Trudeau’s propaganda and not news, Poilievre celebrated in his tweet.

Trudeau has commented that Poilievre’s political goals are not in the interests of the people, and claims he is playing into the pockets of American billionaires who are protected by tech giants.

The matter has been reported on, among other things Guardian.

Stamping with a heavy hand

Twitter also uses the state-sponsored label for Russian and Chinese propaganda agencies. According to the Guardian Twitter has commented that it uses that tag for accounts related to geopolitics and diplomacy.

US public broadcaster NPR previously decided to leave the service after receiving a label saying they were state-funded.

The company also gave the same label to Australia’s ABC and SBS broadcasters. However, according to their comments, the companies are not leaving the service.

The company has only responded to media requests for comments with poop emojis. Twitter is a tech billionaire Elon Musk’s privately owned, and it would seem that he has harnessed the service to popularize his own world view.
