Even before the release of his “tell-all” book “You Thought You Knew” on October 21st, Kevin Federline is in the spotlight – much to the dismay of his ex-wife Britney Spears.
Federline, who has two sons with Spears, recently spoke about the end of Britney’s conservatorship in an interview with tabloid magazine “TMZ Live.” He presented the book as “a kind of cry for help” – for Britney herself and their two children Sean Preston and Jayden James. He stressed that the family is concerned about Britney’s well-being.
Britney Spears quickly responded on her social media channels, accusing Federline of “constantly gaslighting” her in order to financially benefit from her past. Gaslighting is a form of psychological violence in which one person deliberately manipulates another so that the other person doubts their own perception and memory.
Reactions and accusations
Spears said Federline’s portrayal of her relationship with her sons was distorted and served more scandal than truth. She always tried to have a relationship with her children, but was confronted with rejection and emotional distance. At the same time, she criticized Federline’s behavior as a father, which her sons had to witness.
The singer was hurt that one of her sons had only seen her for 45 minutes in five years and the other had only seen her four times. In her statement, she emphasized her love for her children and her determination to be more self-determined with her time and privacy in the future.
“I am an intelligent woman who tries to live a quiet and godly life,” declared Spears with a clear desire for self-assertion. In doing so, she sets a clear counterpoint to the anecdotes in Federline’s book in which he portrays her as unstable.
Emotional consequences and self-assertion
The current dispute is part of a long series of publicly fought conflicts between Spears and those around her. Her protest against her ex-husband is not only directed against the commercial exploitation of her past, but also against the distorted portrayal of her role as a mother and human being.
