‘British Home Minister Suella Braverman fired after riot over pro-Palestine protests’

British Home Secretary Suella Braverman has been fired after – on her own initiative – she published a critical opinion piece about the pro-Palestine demonstrations in the United Kingdom. That reports the BBC Monday.

There was a lot of commotion after Braverman criticized the police’s approach to protests. In an article published on Thursday in the British newspaper The Times, Braverman accused police of applying a “double standard” in handling the protests. The minister wrote that the demonstrations were “disturbingly similar” to those in Northern Ireland.

Braverman claimed that aggressive right-wing demonstrators were “rightly dealt with severely,” while the pro-Palestinian “gangs,” as she called the activists, “were largely ignored.” Her comments were widely condemned by police officers and MPs. It later emerged that Downing Street had not approved Braverman’s article in advance – something that normally has to happen.

Braverman was appointed Home Secretary by Liz Truss in September 2022. In October that year, she had to resign from her position after sending an official document via her personal email – against ministry rules. Six days later, Rishi Sunak brought her back into office.

Sunak had been under pressure for days to fire Braverman. Both Sunak and Braverman have not yet said anything about her dismissal.
