Maintenance was planned for the bridge at the beginning of this month. During the inspection, the bridge turned out to be in a worse condition than expected. As a precaution, the Overtoomse Sluis was therefore immediately closed to heavy traffic, but cyclists and pedestrians were able to cross the bridge.
“Last week, the bridge was further investigated. The temporary emergency measures now provide sufficient support to allow traffic. The damage has not yet been repaired. A plan for permanent repair is being worked on,” the municipality said. Next year it will become clear when the recovery can begin.
Closure
Due to the closure of the bridge, traffic was temporarily diverted via Hoofdweg and Zeilstraat. Tram line 1 also ran a modified route. The bridge could not be opened for shipping.
AT5 took over the day after the closure of the bridge a look. It turned out that not everyone was aware of it at the time. “You would think there would be less traffic here, but that is not too bad. People do not know that the bridge is closed,” said a local resident at the time.
