Brasília (dpa -Afx) – Before the World Climate Conference (COP30) in November in Belém, the indigenous peoples in Brazil presented their own climate protection plan. Under the motto “Our territories are the answer to the climate crisis”, the umbrella organization Articulaçao dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (Apib), among other things, is the protection of the indigenous lands as part of the climate protection policy of the South American country. “We demand that our proposals to be accepted into the self-commitments of Brazil because it is the Brazilian state’s responsibility to take action against the climate crisis,” said Apib Managing Director of Karipuna.
Indigenous peoples protect the biological diversity
Indigenses are considered the key in the fight against climate change. Where indigenous communities have securitized rights, for example, according to a study by the World Food Organization (FAO), significantly fewer areas are cut down than in other areas. Although they only make up five percent of the global population, according to the World Bank, they manage around 80 percent of global biological diversity.
On the occasion of the international day of the indigenous peoples this Saturday, the Catholic relief organization Misereor called for the expansion of oil and gas production to be stopped in the Amazon area. The background is the plans of the state energy group Petrobrá to search for oil in the area of the Amazon on the Atlantic coast of northern Brazil.
Indigenous claims to have a say in the World Climate Conference
“The rights of indigenous peoples must be binding and strengthened in all climate negotiations – our say on the COP30 must not remain a symbolic gesture,” said the indigenous activist Alessandra Korap Munduruku. “It must not be that Brazil presents itself internationally as the host of a climate conference and at the same time serves economic interests at the expense of indigenous communities and the rainforest.”/DDE/DP/ZB
