Eintracht Braunschweig reached the second main round of the DFB Cup on Sunday evening (07/31/2022) in an exciting cup thriller against Hertha BSC. The second division team won 6:5 on penalties.

The Eintracht fans saw the first big chance of the game in the fifth minute, when Immanuël Pherai almost put the hosts ahead after a nice solo. But his right-footed shot was blocked by Dedryck Boyata at the last moment. After that, the guests from the capital got into the game better. The lead quickly followed.

First Selke, then Maolida

Davie Selke headed off a perfect cross from Marvin Plattenhardt’s right and nodded off from four yards out (10′). From then on, Berlin played even more dominantly with the lead behind them and created more scoring chances. Shortly before the break, Myziane Maolida scored the second goal for Hertha from close range after a cross pass from Dodi Lukébakio.

In the second half, Pherai had no luck with his second big chance either. After a throw-in by Keita Endo, the Dutchman hit the near post. But after Pherai’s third outstanding scene, the game took the “different” course that Braunschweig had longed for.

Roller coaster ride stresses the nerves of the fans

Pherai reappeared in the penalty area, hooked the ball to his foot and was hit in the supporting leg by Boyata as he defended. Because Brian Behrendt converted the penalty kick (63.). After that, it only took three minutes for Lower Saxony to equalize: Lion Lauberbach, after a pass from the right, was faster than the Hertha defense and poked the ball into the goal from a central position eight meters away.

The hosts thought they were lucky when the outstanding Pherai Braunschweig took the lead for the first time in the game shortly after the start of extra time. The 21-year-old attacker made it 3-2 (91st) with a counterattack that was played to the end.

Exciting extension

But then the “old lady” hit back twice: first scored Lucas Tousart with a deflected long-range shot into the black, after the start of the second half of extra time, Lukébakio pointed the ball from the right into the mesh of the Braunschweig goal.

But still not enough: In the third to last minute of extra time, Bryan Henning hammered the ball into the net from long range and saved Eintracht on penalties. There, the hosts then had the better end for themselves after Berlin’s Marc Oliver Kempf chased the ball over the Braunschweig goal and Henning again safely converted.
