Hundreds of messages, calls and congratulations on Facebook. Joseph Penning from Helvoirt and Angel de Nijs from Kaatheuvel were elected Brabanders of the Year 2025 on Christmas Day. They received the title because together they have been accompanying a drum band for people with intellectual or physical disabilities with a lot of love and enthusiasm for more than thirty years. A day after the denouement, the two are still stunned.
With tears in their eyes, Angel and Joseph received the title and the accompanying statuette at the Winter Efteling. They could hardly believe it. “It’s overwhelming. But this year’s nominees are all fantastic people, as far as we’re concerned we all actually won,” Joseph said, beaming.
Joseph has been a conductor for 38 years drum band Maurits in Kaatsheuvel. “I had been in other percussion groups, but this was something completely new,” he says. “The first time I was here, I got an arm around my neck and a big hug. Then I was immediately sold.” Angel is chairman of the band and she also lost her heart to the fanatical musicians. They rehearse together every Sunday morning.
Even on Boxing Day, the proud smile does not disappear from their faces. The two enjoy the moment together with the family. “We really enjoyed the evening,” Angel reflects. “And the three members and two volunteers who were in the audience also thought it was very special to be there.”
The rest of the 24-piece band is also very proud of the brand new Brabanders of the Year. “Last night I received a call from someone who said they had watched the broadcast on TV, and even a few tears were shed,” Angel says with emotion.
The title is a testament to their many years of dedication to the drum band. “And it also motivates us to make it a wonderful anniversary year,” says Joseph. Maurits will soon be celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, and that will certainly be a big celebration. “In addition, it is a boost to do something for society, because how great is it to be a volunteer?”

Sunday January 4th will be the first rehearsal of the new year. “And before we pick up the drum sticks, we’ll first toast the victory with something tasty,” the two beam. “And everyone is welcome to drop by.”
